Overview

Matter Management systems, sometimes referred to as case or practice management systems, often serve as the backbone of a law department's technology strategy. A matter management system is a tool for a law department to track and report on information regarding matters handled by the law department.

For the attorney and/or legal professional, the matter management system acts as an electronic file, capturing the information that he or she collects, creates, and discovers during the duration of a matter. For department managers, the system provides reports facilitating trend analysis, cost analysis, and matter workload distribution.

While some vendors still offer traditional client-server versions of their products, most vendors are now offering browser front-end and web-based versions as well. Most matter management systems on the market today offer the following features:

• Detail matter information tracking, customizable by matter type (litigation, transactions, contracts, trademark/IP, customer complaints, advice and internal projects)
• Date tracking with interfaces to calendar products
• Cost management, including invoice processing and allocation
• Budget tracking
