Overview

A document management system, sometimes referred to as an Electronic Document Management System or EDMS, provides the law department with secure access to a centralized repository that manages and controls all electronic data generated by the department. This data includes traditional word processing files, or text files, as well as email, images, PDFs, spreadsheets, and multimedia files.

While most matter management systems and operating systems offer some document management capabilities, a dedicated document management system provides management of all electronic files, whether matter-related or not, and robust management and search features that many operating systems lack.

Document management systems offer the following features:

  • Document creation and capture
  • Check-in/check-out control
  • Document version control
  • Document profiling and classification
  • Extensive search capabilities
  • Lifecycle management
